Martabak Pecenongan 65A - Pantai Indah Kapuk

When I'm back in Jakarta, one thing that I must eat is martabak. I do have a favourite go to place that's close to my house, but in recent years there has been trendy martabak stalls and cafes popping up around Jakarta. One of the most popular one is Martabak Pecenongan 65a. They're famous due to their unusual topping combinations. If you're unfamiliar with martabak, its like a very thick and large crumpet and they usually put chocolate, cheese, crushed peanuts, sesame seed and condensed milk on top. Then it's folded into two and cut into bite size pieces. As you can imagine from the list of toppings,it is not for the faint hearted and definitely not for people with heart disease.

At Martabak Pecenongan, they don't usually use normal chocolate, instead they use Ovomaltine, Nutella or Toblerone, they've even used green tea Kit-Kat. So, a normal martabak can take up to 10 minutes to make, but, at Martabak Pecenongan, due to the massive crowds there every night, the queuing time can be anywhere up to two hours!!!

As the location is quite a trek from my neighbourhood and just thinking about the waiting time has made me faint, I've never tried this place. But, I've always been curious as they're very Instafamous! Well great news... they've opened a branch is Pantai Indah Kapuk, which is relatively close to my house. Even better news, the other day my family and I were driving past and we just happened to drive by their new branch and the best news was, they just opened which meant no queue.

We ordered their signature flavour which was the Nutella with Toblerone, I know, chocolate overload. We waited patiently for our martabak and we waited patiently until we got home to dig in. Even in the car the aroma of chocolate was overwhelming and my stomach grumbled the whole way home.
The box I stared at the whole way home

At home we immediately dug in, I chewed and pondered and was... disappointed.
The I couldn't believe it, my hopes were so high, but as I ate I wished I bought normal martabak from my favourite stall instead (which is around half the price I might add). The dough had not risen properly as they baked it so it was tough to chew and it was over cooked. The mixture of Nutella and Toblerone just tasted like normal chocolate as they were melted together, and the lack of the other toppings just meant there were not other flavours or textures.

Toblerone and Nutella Martabak (Rp. 125,000)

Well at least now I know what it's all about. Also to be fair as the branch is quite new, they might have inexperienced staff members and perhaps the other flavours would taste better.
