One of my favourite group of friends to catch up with is my undergrad gang! We don't see nearly enough of each other, but when we do, it's like no time has passed. Life has pulled us in all different directions, so it's always great to touch base and see everyone. This time I initiated the catch-up and I knew exactly where I wanted us to go, Hermosa in Wembley!
Baked Smokey Spanish Beans ($18) |
After serious and deliberate consideration, I chose the baked smokey Spanish beans for main, it turns out three out of four us chose the same dish! The main reason for this was the crispy pork belly. I was imagining a slice of juicy pork belly with a crispy crackling on top. The reality was not as I imagined. What they meant by crispy pork belly was pork belly schnitzel. It was a little disappointing, especially because the deep fried pork was a little dry. As for the rest of the dish, there were two perfectly poached eggs with the beans and (I think) some crispy fried bread crumbs which added a crunchy texture to an otherwise mushy dish. There was also a side of corn bread, which was bread with some corn kernels mixed through. So the bean dish was delish, but could probably use a little bit more salt. The eggs were so soft and the yolk still runny, which is how I like my eggs. Dipping the bread into the bean mix and putting the pork on top was the best way to eat this dish!
Spanish Omelet ($18) with extra side of Chorizo ($5) |
As for Michelle and her two kids, they shared the Spanish omelet and an extra chorizo. The dish looked amazing with all the vibrant colours and the plating. I did not personally try this dish, but the three of them looked very satisfied with their lunch!
Lime Churros ($14) |
Then came the desserts. We were tossing between having desserts or not, but our sweet tooth got the better of us and we ordered their lime churros. This dish took longer than expected to come out, but it was worth the wait! When it was served the churros were still piping hot and looked so glorious. We immediately dug in, dipping the churros into the lemon curd and the warm white chocolate sauce that came with it. This desserts is as good if not better than it looks! The churros were really crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, each bite was accompanied with a lovely crunch. I much preferred the lemon curd than the warm white chocolate as it was very light yet still indulgent and the acidity added a nice zing to the dessert. Just heavenly!
We had such a nice catch up that day, great weather and certainly, great company! Considering the food, we would rate it 7.5 out of 10.
