Fancy Bumping into Authentic Bites Dumpling - Northbridge

If you've driven past Newcastle Street in Northbridge at night then you would've seen the mile-long queue outside of Authentic Bites Dumpling. We've always wanted to try it, but just couldn't bear the thought of the queue. So, one particularly cold and rainy Monday night, we drove past and saw there was no queue, so I slammed on the brakes, parked and ran inside.

Prawn & Pork Wonton Noodle Soup ($11)

Reading the menu, we wanted to try everything. But, we settled down and decided to order the wonton noodle soup to begin with. I usually prefer the dry wonton noodle, so this was a little different for me, but the noodle was nice and firm and the soup was flavoursome despite how clear and watery it looks. Most of all the wontons were delicious!

Pan Fried Prawn & Chicken Dumplings ($12)

We then ordered the pan fried dumplings. We enjoyed this too, but not as much as the wontons in the noodle. I think the filling could've been tastier. But, this dipped in the vinegar and soy sauce was delectable.

Pork & Prawn Wonton with Spice Sauce ($12)

As a last minute impulse order, we also tried the boiled dumpling with spice sauce. This was hands down the winner dish of the night. The wontons was the same as in the noodles, but drizzled with chilli oil and peanut sauce and crushed peanuts. This was very flavoursome and we demolished this dish in seconds. I highly recommend this dish!

So happy we finally tried this place and now we understand the never-ending queue out the door. It's tasty and affordable!

She'll Be Coming Round the Batavia Corner - Victoria Park

I don't usually crave Indonesian food as Mum cooks it brilliantly at home. And, usually my go-to Indonesian food restaurant is Sparrow in Highgate. But, last weekend Mr. T and I were invited by friends to have lunch at Batavia Corner so we revisited this restaurant after a long time.

Yellow Rice ($2.70) with Beef Rendang ($9)

Batavia's corner menu is extensive and our friend recommended so many different dishes. In the end I chose the beef rendang with a side of yellow fragrant rice. The portion deceivingly large! The beef in the rendan was nice and tender and the sauce was runnier than I expected, but certainly did not lack the richness of the spices.

Nasi Ayam Mercon

Mr. T decided to try something from their special menu, the Nasi Ayam Mercon (fireworks chicken rice). The mercon (fireworks) describes the spiciness of the chilli and as the name suggests the chilli on this dish was like fireworks going off in Mr. T's mouth. I didn't dare try it, but he enjoyed it despite sweating through the whole meal!

Overall, we were very satisfied with our meal here and it made us miss home!

Gone Frisch-ing & Barc - Como

Thursday morning off called for brunch with Miss D. This time we ventured to Frisch and Barc, a cafe I've been itching to try. So glad we picked this place and on a weekday too, we got seats straight away and they treated Miss D's pooch like royalty with complimentary doggy biscuits and a clean water in a silver bowl!

Black Angus corned Beef Potato Hash ($23.90)

After seriously studying the menu and cross-checking with photos on Instagram and Zomato, I decided on the potato hash. No regrets here, the portion was massive (just right for me!) and the dish was delicious. The beef was sliced very thinly which I think decreased the juiciness and taste of the black angus, but the egg was eggcellently cooked! The potato has was certainly the hero of the dish, so delicious, crispy and filling.

Johnny's Breakfast Burger ($19.90)

Miss D ordered the Johnny's breakfast burger. Although I didn't try it, the fact Miss D cleaned her board in no time was more than words could express!

Overall, Miss D and I really enjoyed our breakfast and will certainly be back to try other dishes. Her precious doggy woofed his breakfast too.

Experimenting at the Ramen Lab - Mount Lawley

A new ramen restaurant has opened! Hurrah! I planted the seed in Mr. T's mind to go try this place, before I knew it, he was the one dragging me out the door to check this place out.

Ultra-Men ($16.50)

I chose the Ultra-Men because I can't pass up trying the pork broth and I want all the trimmings with it.  When the ramen arrived at our table, we were asked to mix through the whole bowl thoroughly as the flavours may have settled to the bottom, so we followed suit. To begin with I thought the broth was very subtle, unlike other ramens I've tried in Perth. But, the flavour did get more intense towards the bottom of the bowl and in the end I didn't leave a drop uneaten. The chashu slices were tender and flavoursome and the egg was perfectly soft boiled.

Tori - Paitan ($15.50)

Mr. T decided to try one of the chicken broth ramen, just so we can compare the broths. The chicken broth was unique for a ramen, again I thought the flavours could've been stronger. I did prefer the pork broth, but surprisingly Mr. T preferred the chicken broth.

What we both liked about Ramen Lab's ramen were the noodles, it was denser than the noodles of other ramen places in Perth and we really liked the texture.

Overall, we enjoyed our meal, the ramen were unlike any we've tasted before. I do think it would be better if the stock was more intense in flavour and we thought the price was a tad high for ramen in Perth. But, definitely worth a try and hopefully we can see their improvements in the future.

A Little ChinGrish Never Confused Anyone - Victoria Park

With the rise of fine dining Asian restaurants in Perth, I finally decided to join the trend and try ChinGrish. Below is just a quick bite size review from me.

Salmon Ceviche ($20)

I love anything sashimi-ed, tataki-ed and ceviche-d, so this dish was right up my alley. The salmon by itself was delicous, the flavours were not too overpowering so the freshness of the salmon was apparent. Mixed with the salsa and the crackers the salmon became even more enjoyable!

Assam Curry Fish ($35)

The assam curry fish was by far the heaviest dish of the night. The soup was creamy and the flavours were strong. The fish was nicely cooked so it was very tender, although a little more crispiness on the batter would've been nice. The eggplant was delicious, it soaked up all the flavours of the curry!

Kam Heong Pipi ($28)

This clam dish is like an Asian version of Chilli Mussels. There was a good level of spiciness and the clams were cooked nicely! This dish was really fun to eat with our bare hands!

Tea Smoked Duck ($30)

The tea smoked duck was like a Western take of Peking duck. To be honest, I still prefer the Asian Peking duck. The duck was perfectly cooked, it was tender and the skin was crisp, however the sauce lacked the Hoisin sauce flavour I'm used too in Peking duck.

Pandacotta ($15)

The C4 ($13)

The desserts exceeded our expectations! The pandan in the pandacotta was fragrant and the texture was silky smooth. The C4 had everything a dessert needs, ice-cream, cake and crunch!

Overall, this is one cool place to hang out and you can't go past their desserts!

One Bites By D Leaves You Wanting More - Mount Hawthorn

It's a great feeling to get along with your work colleagues. Not only does it make the weekdays bearable, it means you can extend your friendship beyond those work hours! Well, my work colleagues and I decided to have a little weekend catch up to gossip all things outside of work. We decided on Bites By D so we can indulge on both savoury and sweet treats. Below are what we shared.

Opera Cake ($9)
Salted Caramel Cronuts By D ($9)
Apple and Custard Tart ($9)
Toffee Crunch Eclair ($8)

We did go a tad crazy with the sweets, they all looked too scrumptious not to try! The Opera cake was rich and decadent, all the layers were delicious. The cronut was a little denser than what I would've expected and liked, it was more donut than cronut. The apple and custard tart was the most refreshing and the cutest! It was a good balance between sweet, tart and crunch. The toffee crunch eclair was delicious and the toffee certainly crunched to perfection.

Beef Gourmet Sausage Roll ($3.50)

For savoury I chose the beef sausage roll. The portion was small, but proportional to it's price. It was served piping hot and it was delicious. The pastry was flaky and buttery, just delicious!

Overall, we were please with the food and atmosphere!
